Sunset Over Owler Tor

Sunset Over Owler Tor - Landscape Photography
The winter solstice sun sets over the peak of Over Owler Tor, seen from the ramparts of Carl Wark. The sun reflects off of ice, in a stone mason's trough.

Carl Wark is something of an enigma. Classified as a hillfort, it is a natural plateau of rock, rising out of Hathersage Moor with three sides defended by sheer escarpments and the western end blocked by a great drystone wall and earthen rampart. A narrow entrance sits in a return at the southern end of the wall. Theories abound about it's construction date and purpose. From neolithic ritual enclosure and iron age defensive structure, to dark ages and medieval.

The name Carl Wark is thought to be a corruption of Carl's Work. Carl being an old name for the Devil.
