My recent image. 'Evening Stroll' has won a coverted Editor's Choice Award at EPhotoZine. It is not common for me to include people in my landscape images, but it this case, it seemed to suit the mood that I was trying to capture. The shot was taken on Stanage Edge in early August.

I started out on Sunday morning with the intention of catching the first rays of the rising sun hitting Alderman's Hill, on Saddleworth Moor, from Adam's Cross. Parking at the A635 layby close to Hollin Brown Knoll, what first appeared to be mist rising from the reservoirs in the valley below, soon became apparent to be smoke from a fire spreading across the slopes of Ashway Hey, close to Dovestones Reservoir. The fire was extinguished by 7.00am and fortunately didn't encroach on any of the houses in the area, on the opposite side of the valley. This was one of three fires to hit the area over the weekend, with others at Compton Moor and Rishworth Moor. Last week's fire on Marsden Moor makes it four in a week. Moorland Dawn, sunrise on Saddleworth Moor, has won a Guest Editor's Award from on-line photography magazine, EPhotoZine. Fearing the worst, brass monkeys everywhere avoided Saddleworth Moor on Saturday morning. Christ on a bike, it was cold! Maybe not a bad thing considering the climb up here. The views however made every agonising, lung busting step worthwhile. Not to mention heaving myself out of bed at 3.30am and striking out from the car park at 5.15am to reach the top for sunrise at 6.30am.

The image 'Two Giants' has been awarded 'Photo of the Week' at Your Photo Tips. Saddleworth Moor is such a wild and beautiful place. The Moors Murders and countless newspaper articles have for years cast a dark shadow over it, portraying it as a bleak and barren nightmare of a place. Douglas Hurd described the moor as, "featurless". This however couldn't be further from the truth, as it is littered with a rich history and folklore and has some of the most wonderful views.

Gritstone & Sky Photography of the Southern Pennines by Andy Hemingway 3rd - 31st March 2010 The Coach House Gallery, 10 Andrew Street, Wakefield, WF1 3QH
An exhibition of the landscape photography of Andy Hemingway, capturing the Southern Pennines of Yorkshire and the Peak District in all of their natural beauty. For me, landscape photography is much more that just capturing a view. I often research the history, folklore and geology of the areas that I shoot and try to convey something of the spirit of the place. My passion for the landscape began during childhood. Born and raised in the Pennine town of Huddersfield, regular walks on the surrounding hills with my father, cemented an early familiarity with Yorkshire’s rugged and unique landscape. The locations that I visit have not only been formed by the forces of nature but have a long history of activity by humans, that has shaped the landscape that we currently see. From the farmers of the Neolithic, through exploitation by industry and commerce, to the leisure playgrounds of today. Gritstone & Sky is showing until the end of March.
