A Dramatic Edge Exhibition

A Dramatic Edge
Landscape Photography of the Peak District

Friday 20th August - Friday 27th August 2010

Opening Hours: 9am - 5pm - Friday to Friday (inc. weekends)

Arkwright's Mill, Mill Lane, Cromford, Matlock, Derbyshire DE4 3RQ

Richard Cooper
Nick Walton
Andy Hemingway

A collection of contemporary landscape images by three local photographers, currently working in the Peak District National Park.

Richard Cooper
Richard is based in on the Southern edge of the Derbyshire Dales and took up landscape photography in 2005. A self taught photographer, Richard has developed a contemporary style of his own, and can often be found tramping the moors and dales, searching for that perfect moment and composition which best convey the true character of The Peak District.

Nick Walton
Nick is based near the Pennine town of Huddersfield. The stunning Pennine backdrop is a great setting for my passion for Landscape photography. My job involves travelling throughout the North of the UK and Ireland. This has allowed me to capture the vibrancy in the renaissance we are currently seeing in several Northern cities. I hope some of my images go someway to disprove the old saying "it's grim up north".

Andy Hemingway
Andy originates from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire and is currently based near Sheffield. Andy has held a life long fascination for the landscape of the Pennines, it's history, folklore and ever changing moods. Mostly working in the northern 'Dark Peak' area, Andy strives to capture this often barren but always beautiful landscape in all of it's brooding magnificence.

Evening Stroll by Andy Hemingway

My recent image. 'Evening Stroll' has won a coverted Editor's Choice Award at EPhotoZine. It is not common for me to include people in my landscape images, but it this case, it seemed to suit the mood that I was trying to capture. The shot was taken on Stanage Edge in early August.

Smoke from the fire in Ashway Hey spreads across Saddleworth Moor

I started out on Sunday morning with the intention of catching the first rays of the rising sun hitting Alderman's Hill, on Saddleworth Moor, from Adam's Cross.

Parking at the A635 layby close to Hollin Brown Knoll, what first appeared to be mist rising from the reservoirs in the valley below, soon became apparent to be smoke from a fire spreading across the slopes of Ashway Hey, close to Dovestones Reservoir.

The fire was extinguished by 7.00am and fortunately didn't encroach on any of the houses in the area, on the opposite side of the valley.

This was one of three fires to hit the area over the weekend, with others at Compton Moor and Rishworth Moor. Last week's fire on Marsden Moor makes it four in a week.

I am very pleased to announce that Photographers Direct are new representatives for stock photography images of my work.

Photographers Direct are pioneers in the field of 'Fair Trade Stock Photography'. Unlike the raft of Micro Stock sites out there, which profit from the exploitation of photographers (usually paying the photographer 20 cents per dollar), Photographers Direct allow the photographer to negotiate a price with the buyer, and keep 80% of the sale price.

"Micropayment sites sell your work for peanuts and give you the shells"
Quote from World of Stock.

You will NEVER find any of my work on Micro Stock sites such as iStock, Fotolia, Dreamstime, Shutterstock etc. I believe that the rise of such sites is destroying the option of stock photography as a viable stream of revenue for photographers the world over. Photographers pay to buy and maintain their equipment, photographers pay for their travel costs to capture images and it is the photographer who should profit from the sale of the resulting images.

You can find the Photographers Direct website at: www.photographersdirect.com

mootland dawn winds guest editor award from EPZ

Moorland Dawn, sunrise on Saddleworth Moor, has won a Guest Editor's Award from on-line photography magazine, EPhotoZine.

Fearing the worst, brass monkeys everywhere avoided Saddleworth Moor on Saturday morning. Christ on a bike, it was cold! Maybe not a bad thing considering the climb up here. The views however made every agonising, lung busting step worthwhile. Not to mention heaving myself out of bed at 3.30am and striking out from the car park at 5.15am to reach the top for sunrise at 6.30am.

This is the view from Ashway Rocks above Yeoman Hay Reservoir. First light hits the slopes of Alderman's Hill and Alphin Pike beyond, with Dovestones Reservoir at their foot. Beyond Alphin, you can also see the high rise office blocks of Manchester from up here, although the wide angle aspect has pushed that too far back in the frame to be seen clearly.

A couple of minutes after this shot, clouds moved across the sun and within minutes, low cloud started to cloak the moor. The density and speed at which this moved was astonishing. From virtually clear skies to a white out within a few minutes. I was on a mission to find The Trinnicle on Raven Stones Brow but by the time I got there, the views up Greenfield Brook were lost in the mist.

The image 'Two Giants' has been awarded 'Photo of the Week' at Your Photo Tips.

Saddleworth Moor is such a wild and beautiful place. The Moors Murders and countless newspaper articles have for years cast a dark shadow over it, portraying it as a bleak and barren nightmare of a place. Douglas Hurd described the moor as, "featurless". This however couldn't be further from the truth, as it is littered with a rich history and folklore and has some of the most wonderful views.

This view is from near the summit of Alderman's Hill looking across Greenfield to Alphin Pike. Folklore tells the tale of two giants, Alphin and Alder who lived on their respective hills. Both sought the affections of Rimmon, a water nymph who lived in the waters of Chew Beck below. Rimmon chose Alphin, which infuriated Alder and the two giants fought, hurling rocks at each other until Alphin was struck and killed. In her grief, Rimmon cast herself from rocks into the valley below and joined Alphin in death.

There is a strong likelihood that this tale is the mythologisation of a Dark Ages battle that could well have taken place here, between the advancing Angles of Northumbria and the Celts of Southern Rheged. Anyone familiar with the tale of the battle of Win Hill, will remember that in c.626AD, the Northumbians defeated the Mercians by rolling boulders down the hillside. The Northumbians had taken Elmet (modern day West Yorkshire) in the early part of the 7th C and advanced on Rheged, which itself fell sometime before 730AD. There are a number of pointers in the landscape to this area being an ancient boarder and even the place names leave clues. Alder being of German origin, Al being a Celtic word for a rock or a hill.

Gritstone & Sky

Photography of the Southern Pennines by Andy Hemingway

3rd - 31st March 2010

The Coach House Gallery, 10 Andrew Street, Wakefield, WF1 3QH

An exhibition of the landscape photography of Andy Hemingway, capturing the Southern Pennines of Yorkshire and the Peak District in all of their natural beauty.

For me, landscape photography is much more that just capturing a view. I often research the history, folklore and geology of the areas that I shoot and try to convey something of the spirit of the place.

My passion for the landscape began during childhood. Born and raised in the Pennine town of Huddersfield, regular walks on the surrounding hills with my father, cemented an early familiarity with Yorkshire’s rugged and unique landscape.

The locations that I visit have not only been formed by the forces of nature but have a long history of activity by humans, that has shaped the landscape that we currently see. From the farmers of the Neolithic, through exploitation by industry and commerce, to the leisure playgrounds of today.

I believe that the landscape of the Pennines is one of the finest in the world. It may not have the mountains and craggy coastlines of Scotland and Wales, that are currently so popular with photographers, but it is ours and we should take a pride in it and treat it with the respect that it deserves.

Gritstone & Sky is showing until the end of March.
