Gritstone & Sky Photography of the Southern Pennines by Andy Hemingway 3rd - 31st March 2010 The Coach House Gallery, 10 Andrew Street, Wakefield, WF1 3QH
An exhibition of the landscape photography of Andy Hemingway, capturing the Southern Pennines of Yorkshire and the Peak District in all of their natural beauty. For me, landscape photography is much more that just capturing a view. I often research the history, folklore and geology of the areas that I shoot and try to convey something of the spirit of the place. My passion for the landscape began during childhood. Born and raised in the Pennine town of Huddersfield, regular walks on the surrounding hills with my father, cemented an early familiarity with Yorkshire’s rugged and unique landscape. The locations that I visit have not only been formed by the forces of nature but have a long history of activity by humans, that has shaped the landscape that we currently see. From the farmers of the Neolithic, through exploitation by industry and commerce, to the leisure playgrounds of today. Gritstone & Sky is showing until the end of March.

After the 'Big Freeze' came the thaw, followed by three weeks of the dullest grey skies which allowed only the weakest, most diffused light to penetrate. Not good weather for landscape photography. So precious few outings have been made since the snow disappeared. Even a sunrise trip to Froggatt Edge a couple of weeks ago produced little by the way of results.

Landscape Prints I was raised on the Pennine Hills of Yorkshire and since childhood have been fascinated by it's rugged and sometimes harsh landscape. For me, landscape photography is all about being there - out on the hills and moors.

So far this winter is proving to be a bumper year for snow images. The Christmas break allowed me to get out and about to do a lot of much needed new landscape photography. Beginning with a few trips to favourite local locations such as Royd Moor and Whitley Edge, to capture photographs of snow on the views to Thurlstone Moor and Woodhead Pass, followed by a few post Christmas trips into the Peak District. Boxing Day saw me on Higger Tor, followed by another trip over Hathersage Moor from Over Owler Tor to Carl Wark. My final landscape session of the year took me to Carhead Rocks, just below Stanage Edge for an amazing sunset on the wind hardened snow and ice.
My first outing of 2010 was to Hordron Edge on Sunday 3rd January. I had originally set off for Froggatt Edge but as road conditions on the A57 were poor, I decided to park at Cutthroat Bridge and make for the Seven Stone of Hordron stone circle and capture the view over Derwent Valley and Ladybower Reservoir. The walk to the top of the edge was a slog through knee high snow drifts but once the sun began to rise, I was rewarded with the most wonderful pink light along the top of Derwent Edge and Win Hill.
Since Tuesday's snowfall, I've been pretty much snowed in but am looking forward to doing as much photography as possible while the snow is still on the ground. New images will be uploaded regularly to the website galleries, so return often for updates.

Raised in Huddersfield on the Pennine Hills, working mostly in the Southern Pennines of Yorkshire and The Peak District. The landscape photography of Andy Hemingway captures the moods and drama of this beautiful part of Britain.
Andy often researches the areas that he photographs, so that his images are informed by history, geology and folklore. Often returning again and again at different times of day and throughout the seasons to capture the landscape in all of it's different moods.
This will be Andy's first solo exhibition.
